In 1997 at the age of 24 I took a road trip through the American West and covered quite a bit of miles. After I met my buddy Ben – who at the time was living in Berkeley – down in Carmel, I was on my way alone with a little tent and a huge cooler. Five weeks later I arrived back in San Francisco. Listening to the Grateful Dead and Neil Young, I surely enjoyed the solitude on the road and found myself a sweet spot to camp every night. Reading John Muir and Edward Abbey I embarked on this journey which easily belongs into the top ten of best vacations ever. I visited places such as Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Yosemite, Death Valley, the Sequoias and Slickrock Canyons. Back in the Bay, 35.000 people gathered in Golden Gate Park and celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Summer Of Love. …  I recently had a chance to scan some of the slides which I took back then with a Nikon scanner that my brother borrowed me. Of course the scans don’t look as sharp and detailed as the originals but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. I think the only film that found its way into my camera back then was good old Kodakchrome although i might have shot some Ektachrome as well, don’t remember. Time flies … All images copyright: Christian Hahn
